1 day ago 0

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited China on Saturday, marking a significant step in enhancing the relationship between the two nations. His visit included the inauguration of a new bridge connecting North Korea and China. This move aligns with Kim’s assertive foreign policy, aiming to strengthen ties with powerful allies against perceived threats from the United States.

The visit to China, Kim’s first in a year, showcased efforts to align Pyongyang with Beijing and Moscow amid rising global tensions. Kim arrived in Dandong, a city on the Chinese border, after crossing the newly opened bridge. The South Korean Unification Ministry and China’s Xinhua News Agency confirmed the arrival.

In Dandong, Kim visited a memorial dedicated to China’s support during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. He met with Wang Huning, a prominent figure in China’s Communist Party. At the memorial, Kim emphasized the enduring friendship between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China, underscoring its deep historical roots, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

During discussions, Kim reiterated his commitment to bilateral cooperation while Wang shared President Xi Jinping’s greetings. Wang noted the significance of Kim’s visit in reinforcing the DPRK-China friendship, according to KCNA.

Independent journalists were not present at the events, which were publicized through images distributed by the North Korean government. The itinerary also included a tour of a car factory, followed by a farewell at the bridge with Wang accompanying Kim.

Before returning to North Korea, Kim expressed that the bridge symbolizes unity and cooperation between the two countries, as reported by KCNA. His visit signifies ongoing efforts to strengthen relations with China, North Korea’s traditional ally and economic supporter, after a period of focused engagement with Russia.

North Korea’s recent alignment includes military assistance to Russia during the Ukraine conflict, potentially reciprocated by military and economic support. Kim last visited Beijing in September 2025, during which he met Xi Jinping and attended a military parade with Vladimir Putin along with other global leaders.
