The Pittsburgh Steelers secured a victory against the New Orleans Saints during the NFL’s historic game in France. The event took place amid a backdrop of protests and unrest throughout Paris in the days leading up to the match.
Concerns had escalated as violence and vandalism broke out over dissatisfaction with living costs and public services in France. Even President Donald Trump expressed his worries about the game. Despite these challenges, the NFL proceeded with the game at Stade de France, just outside Paris.
Security around the match was tight. Police presence was noticeable outside the stadium as officials aimed to ensure the safety of attendees. This was necessary given the events unfolding in Paris and the shift of a major soccer match from Saturday to Monday due to the unrest.
Fans faced minimal disturbances, though they encountered some delays. “I’ve seen some graffiti, but nothing more serious,” one fan stated. Another mentioned, “There were a few delays, but it was manageable.”
Among the attendees was a fan from Mexico, who found the protests familiar as their home country faces similar issues. “Our government has problems too. I came for the game,” he commented.
The NFL coordinated with Parisian police and several authorities, including the U.S. State Department, to maintain order. Commissioner Roger Goodell and team owners met with President Emmanuel Macron to discuss security plans.
Despite challenges, spectators explored Paris. “Some shops were closed, but overall, the city wasn’t as bad as expected,” a visitor noted. Nevertheless, the damage to properties during the protests was evident. “They’ve gone too far when vandalizing,” another attendee remarked.
The game concluded smoothly, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio later confirmed. The NFL continues to host international games, with future matches scheduled in Spain, Germany, and Mexico.
