Alaska Democrats, along with Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola, have made a request to a federal judge for the rapid dismissal of a lawsuit initiated by the Trump administration. This lawsuit aims to prevent Alaska from certifying electoral outcomes if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan faces a narrow defeat.
President Donald Trump announced that he had instructed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to file a lawsuit against Alaska and its election officials. The legal action focuses on the U.S. Senate ballot containing two candidates named Dan Sullivan, a situation the administration alleges as an attempt by Democrats to mislead voters. The lawsuit claims that votes intended for Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired educator listed as such on ballots, could have altered the results in favor of the Trump-endorsed incumbent under Alaska’s ranked choice voting system.
In a Sunday court submission, Peltola’s campaign, along with the Senate campaign committee of her party, expressed concerns. They suggested that President Trump and the Attorney General might use this lawsuit to wrongly imply doubts about the legitimacy of Alaska’s election results and pave the way for unlawful challenges in case of a Peltola victory.
The submission references a Truth Social post by President Trump from Saturday. In the post, Trump characterized the ranked-choice voting ballot for the Alaska Senate race as “a total Democrat scam meant to confuse the voter,” suggesting that Senator Dan Sullivan might lose votes to a newcomer who has no political history. Trump further accused that Daniel J. Sullivan’s presence is part of a Democratic strategy to “steal the election.” He said the DOJ lawsuit is an effort to “stop this impending crime and tragedy.” Trump warned, “The Democrats are trying to steal this important Republican Seat and, if that happens, everything we’ve done for Alaska will come to an immediate halt.”
David R. Fox, the attorney for Peltola’s campaign and the Senate campaign committee, branded the DOJ’s lawsuit as “entirely baseless.” Fox urged swift consideration of their motions to intervene and dismiss, seeking a decision before the election day on November 3.
This situation continues to develop, and further updates are anticipated.
