Warnings Issued for Electric Vehicles Following Coastal Floods in Southern California

17 minutes ago 0

Coastal flooding in Southern California has raised concerns about the safety of electric vehicles and other battery-operated transport. The Laguna Beach Fire Department has warned that saltwater exposure can harm lithium-ion batteries, potentially triggering fires long after the initial contact.

On October 10, 2026, waves from Tropical Storm Rachel hit a walkway in front of homes in Long Beach, California. Homes and infrastructure in coastal locations like Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Malibu faced significant flooding and damage from high tides and storm surges.

Emergency measures included mandatory evacuations in Long Beach for portions of Seaside Walk. As the storm moved through the region, flash flood warnings were issued for Orange, Riverside, and Imperial counties due to widespread flooding.

The coastal flood warning along the Los Angeles County coastline remained until Sunday afternoon, with forecasts predicting 8-foot tides and surf reaching 5 to 8 feet, leading to flooding and beach erosion.

Fire Risk in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Officials highlighted that saltwater exposure might create a fire hazard in battery-powered vehicles. Even if the vehicle seems to function normally, floodwater reaching the batteries could pose risks. Owners suspecting saltwater damage should avoid driving or charging these vehicles. Instead, they should contact insurance, arrange towing, and have a certified mechanic inspect the vehicle.

Electric bicycles and scooters are subject to similar risks. Warning signs such as smoke, unusual sounds, or excessive heat signal a potentially dangerous battery. When noticing these signs, individuals should distance themselves from the vehicle and call 911.

Attempting to move or extinguish a smoking vehicle is advised against, as the danger might not be immediately obvious. Battery fires could occur several days or weeks after the floodwaters recede. Quick action and professional assessment are crucial to ensure safety.
