Michael Jordan, renowned as “His Airness,” continues to make headlines. Although he hasn’t played an NBA game in over 20 years, his memorabilia achieves astonishing sales. A jersey worn by Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals, autographed and featured in the documentary “The Last Dance,” recently sold for $14 million. This sale marks a record for basketball memorabilia, being the highest price ever achieved.

Pennsylvania-based Hunt Auctions disclosed this significant transaction. Miami real estate investor Ron Firman purchased the iconic red Chicago Bulls jersey. This item symbolizes Jordan’s remarkable career, marking the Bulls’ sixth championship in eight seasons. On June 16, 1998, in Chicago’s Grant Park, Jordan celebrated by showing six fingers for each championship win.

Michael Jordan’s status in the sports memorabilia market has transcended to an elite asset class, often associated with masterpieces.

This statement by David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, highlights Jordan’s enduring legacy. The jersey sale is the second-highest price for a game-worn jersey in any sport, surpassed only by Babe Ruth’s “called shot” jersey from the 1932 World Series, sold for $24.12 million in 2024.

Jordan’s jerseys from the 1998 NBA Finals continue to demand sky-high prices. His Game 1 and Game 3 jerseys sold for over $10 million each, totaling more than $36 million for three jerseys from this memorable finals series.

Ron Firman, excited about acquiring a part of basketball history, remarked on Jordan’s worldwide respect and extraordinary talent.

The jersey, originally bought by a private collector in 2003, had changed hands only once before this landmark sale. Jordan’s influence on the memorabilia market persists, affording collectors opportunities to own slices of his illustrious career.

In 2023, another piece of Jordan memorabilia made headlines. A pair of Air Jordan sneakers worn during the same finals series sold for $2.2 million through Sotheby’s, setting a new record for sneaker sales.

Decades after his championship-winning shot against the Utah Jazz, Jordan’s legacy and memorabilia continue to captivate collectors worldwide.
