During Kentucky’s 35-34 win over LSU in Lexington, the game was marked by several crucial plays. These moments are typical in a one-point game resolved in overtime. However, one play from the first half stands out for LSU head coach Lane Kiffin.
With three seconds left in the second quarter and the ball on LSU’s one-yard line, Kentucky faced a choice: kick a field goal to tie the game at 17 or try for a touchdown to seize momentum. Kentucky head coach Will Stein chose the latter, and quarterback Kenny Minchey secured a touchdown. Yet, the decision stirred controversy.
The LSU defense seemed to halt Minchey at the goal line, but a second effort by Kentucky’s offensive line pushed him across the line. Officials could have stopped the play, but no whistle was blown, granting Kentucky a touchdown.
During a press conference, Kiffin expressed his frustration with the lack of a whistle. He shared that the line judge mentioned he couldn’t blow the play dead due to the stakes involved. Kiffin protested, arguing that rules should be followed regardless of the play’s significance.
The lack of officiating was not the only contentious aspect of the game. After LSU scored in overtime, Kentucky responded with a touchdown and chose to aim for two points and victory. During their first attempt, a Kentucky player’s flinch led to a flag, which was negated by a timeout.
Moments later, Minchey again reached the end zone, securing Kentucky’s win in consecutive overtime games.
