Madison Officer-Involved Shooting Sparks Protest

A police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, shot and killed a man who had injured him with a knife while resisting arrest. The incident occurred on Wednesday and led to large protests at the state’s Capitol.

Cellphone footage of the shooting, featuring three audible gunshots, has spread across social media. This video shows several cars stopping at the intersection while people watch the incident unfold.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson addressed the media, stating that the deceased man was in his 30s, but he did not disclose the man’s name publicly. Protesters identified him as Corey Ruiz, as reported by the Wisconsin Examiner. Social media clips also show demonstrators chanting Ruiz’s name. Wisconsin Right Now, another news outlet, confirmed the man’s identity as Ruiz through two unnamed sources familiar with the event.

Patterson mentioned at the press conference that the circulating footage provided only a partial view of the incident.

Details of the Madison Shooting

Patterson explained that the police responded to a call shortly before 1 p.m., following reports of someone attempting to access parked vehicles. “Officers located the man, tried to contact him, but he fled on a bicycle through nearby backyards,” the police chief recounted.

Officers re-encountered the man at Baldwin and Williamson streets around 1:30 p.m. Patterson said the man either fell off his bike or was taken down by officers, leading to a physical struggle. During the altercation, the man used a knife to injure an officer.

The officer who had been injured deployed a Taser, but it failed. That same officer then fired his gun, and the man was later declared dead at the hospital. The police released a photo of the knife involved in the incident.

Patterson described the officer who shot as a veteran. However, details about the officer or the man were limited.

Black advocacy groups in Madison stated the deceased was Black. Brandi Grayson, the head of Urban Triage, an advocacy group, reported, “Today, Madison police shot a Black man three times at close range during a mental health crisis. Video shows him dead on the street, with officers handcuffing and piling on his body.”

The Division of Criminal Investigation of the Wisconsin Department of Justice will conduct an independent investigation because police personnel are involved. As per department policy, the four officers present will take administrative leave.
