Amazon halted its partnership with 21 Air after a cargo plane loaded with Amazon packages overshot the runway at Miami International Airport. The incident occurred on Sept. 6, 2026, when a Boeing 767 ran 1,300 feet past the runway and collided with a van carrying workers. All five occupants of the van died, and five others sustained injuries.
According to Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel, the company will support the investigation and review the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. 21 Air, based in North Carolina, had been transporting packages for Amazon since 2024 but did not immediately comment on Amazon’s decision.
The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation into the incident. They plan to examine various aspects, including the plane’s ownership history, weather conditions, maintenance records, and 21 Air’s operations. Preliminary information from the NTSB indicates that pilots were warned about excessive speed during landing. Cockpit audio also included automated alerts about descent speed and approaching terrain. The aircraft, a 32-year-old Boeing 767, was originally built for passenger use. It served several international airlines before its conversion to a cargo plane in 2015, as noted by flight-tracking service Flightradar24.
