LSU’s Strong Season May Lead to College Football Playoff

1 day ago 0

LSU is positioning itself for a shot at the College Football Playoff under Lane Kiffin’s leadership, but the road remains challenging. The Tigers started impressively, defeating Clemson 51-10, and securing wins against Texas A&M, McNeese State, and Louisiana Tech. However, they stumbled with narrow losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky, leaving little room for errors.

Responding effectively, LSU shut out Mississippi State 31-0 and beat Auburn 38-17 on the road. They now stand at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, ranked No. 15 in the AP poll. With momentum building, Joel Klatt from FOX Sports included LSU in his 12-team playoff prediction, ranking them as a No. 11 seed despite forecasting a 9-3 finish. He anticipates LSU defeating Alabama and Tennessee in November but losing to Texas. Klatt believes these wins could ensure an at-large playoff spot as LSU could edge out SEC rivals like Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky, all projected to finish 9-3 as well.

Four games remain for LSU, beginning with a matchup against No. 10 Alabama on November 7. Following this, they face No. 11 Texas and visit No. 16 Tennessee before concluding their season at Arkansas. This is a challenging series of games, yet also a chance for LSU to prove its standing among SEC’s elite. Winning all remaining games would give them three significant victories over ranked opponents, solidifying their playoff position. Even with a loss to Texas, a 9-3 record could still be sufficient for postseason inclusion, especially with victories over Tennessee and Alabama.

Kentucky adds complexity to this scenario. The Wildcats, having already defeated LSU, hold a 7-1 record and lead the SEC with a 5-1 conference record. Their sole defeat was to Alabama in Week 2. Upcoming challenges include matchups against Tennessee, No. 17 Florida, No. 23 Missouri, and Louisville. If Kentucky were to win out and go 11-1, it could potentially bolster LSU’s playoff appeal. Joel Klatt, however, predicts Kentucky might falter towards season’s end.

Achieving CFP participation would be significant for Kiffin’s first season. LSU entered with national title hopes, supported by top transfer and recruiting classes. The university invested over $40 million in its roster and $91 million in Kiffin. A successful postseason could validate these expenditures, especially if LSU advances far.
