The Kansas City Chiefs recently signed former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker to address struggles with their current kicker, Harrison Butker. Despite Butker’s performance issues this season, with only 11 successful field goals out of 16 attempts, Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub expressed unwavering support for Butker.
Toub’s Confidence in Butker
Toub stated firmly, ‘Butker is our kicker. We’re focused on helping him improve and regain his form.’ The team’s decision to bring Tucker on board seems aimed at fostering competition and motivation.
Despite recent setbacks, Butker impressed during practices. Notably, on a windy day with 28-mile-an-hour gusts, Butker made 10 consecutive field goals, demonstrating resilience and skill. Toub remarked, ‘He did an excellent job, showing he’s capable of getting back on track.’
Butker is our kicker. We’re trying to improve, we’re trying to get Butker right.
The Tucker Factor
The Chiefs evaluated several kickers including Ben Sauls and Harrison Mevis. However, Tucker’s proficiency stood out. He showcased remarkable accuracy, completing 30 kicks in a rigorous practice session, nailing 60 percent of them within a six-foot range in the center of the uprights.
Tucker’s NFL tenure includes a recent 10-game suspension due to alleged personal conduct violations. Despite these allegations, Toub acknowledged Tucker’s capabilities, saying, ‘He performed exceptionally well, making every kick with precision.’
Controversy and Criticism
Tucker’s signing drew criticism due to past allegations of sexual misconduct involving multiple massage therapists, though Tucker denies these claims. The decision to sign him sparked public debate.
I maintain I did not act inappropriately at any point before, during, or after a professional bodywork treatment session.
Looking Forward
As the Chiefs prepare for their upcoming game against the Denver Broncos, Toub acknowledged the pressure on Butker, especially after missing a critical 45-yard field goal in a recent match against the Seattle Seahawks. Toub underscored the importance of converting short-range attempts in close games.
The situation remains dynamic, with Butker retaining his position for now, but continued struggles could prompt a reevaluation.
The Chiefs aim to support Butker’s return to form while maintaining readiness with Tucker as a capable alternative.
