The Indianapolis Colts have started trading key players, raising questions about running back Jonathan Taylor’s future with the team. As the NFL trade deadline approaches, speculation surrounds whether the Colts will trade Taylor to gain more draft picks.
Taylor, addressing these rumors, stated he has not requested a trade and wishes to stay with the Colts. However, he acknowledges that the decision lies with the management. “I haven’t heard anything,” Taylor stated, according to a report by FOX59’s Mike Chappell. He emphasized his pride in playing for the Colts alongside teammates like Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, even though business decisions might lead to unexpected changes.
Recently, the Colts traded All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, receiving a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick in exchange. Shortly after, DeForest Buckner was traded back to the San Francisco 49ers, fetching a 2027 fourth-round pick. Wide receiver Josh Downs has also requested to leave the Colts, coinciding with owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon’s decision to fire GM Chris Ballard after ten years of service.
Despite these trades and rumors, Taylor remains focused on his role within the team. He aims to support his teammates as they prepare for their upcoming division game against Jacksonville. “The only thing that I can control is rallying these guys in the locker room,” Taylor mentioned, highlighting the importance of team unity in challenging times.
Irsay-Gordon reportedly seeks to keep Taylor, who extended his contract with the Colts for two years at $44 million in August. Yet, trades happen frequently, as demonstrated by recent league moves involving players with new contracts.
With the trade deadline on November 10 approaching, the Colts’ coaching staff, led by Shane Steichen, continues to prepare the team. Steichen, when asked about Taylor’s trade status, responded, “Those are hypothetical things right now.” This suggests that while Taylor is being considered for a trade, he remains part of the team for the time being.
If the Colts decide to trade Taylor, acquiring him would bring a top-tier running back to any team. At 27 years old, Taylor has consistently delivered strong performances, rushing for over 1,100 yards in four of his six seasons. This year, he has already amassed 587 yards and eight touchdowns in just seven games.
