Fresh images show visible damage at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool amid ongoing work on President Donald Trump’s renovation project. Sections of the pool bottom appear peeled and patched, with workers actively addressing the issues on site.
Installation Flaws, Not Vandalism
Weeks ago, federal prosecutors clarified that flaws in the pool’s installation, not vandalism, were responsible for much of the damage. This revelation followed a political dispute after the Trump administration hastily reopened the site before July Fourth celebrations. Despite concerns of vandalism contributing to the damage, Trump admitted to some contractor error during the renovation.
Court filings mentioned former Olympian David Hearn faced criminal charges for alleged damage to the pool. Charges were dropped after authorities recognized installation issues rather than vandalism.
When Newsweek reached out for comments, the White House directed them to the National Park Service, which Newsweek contacted through an online form.
Renovation Goals and Challenges
Trump aimed to improve the Reflecting Pool’s appearance, applying a blue coating named “American flag blue” and tackling persistent algae blooms. However, setbacks quickly emerged.
Days after completion, algae returned, causing murky water. Officials employed hydrogen peroxide and nanobubble ozone technology to combat the growth.
Another controversy arose from Trump’s claim that vandals caused a 300-foot gash in the pool’s new liner, intensifying the ongoing scrutiny.
Initially suggested as a quick, low-cost project, the renovation ultimately cost over $15 million.
Visual Documentation and Current Status
Newsweek’s photographs, taken on Tuesday, reveal repair work continues as crews strive to restore the landmark.
The recent problems, including peeling liner and algae growth, have raised questions about the coating’s adhesion during installation. Despite continued blame on vandalism by Trump, federal prosecutors identified improper installation as the cause.
The site still shows peeling layers, according to Tuesday’s photos, with construction crews actively working.
Additional Renovation and Grass Issues
Attention has also focused on patches of dead grass near the National Mall following Trump’s Fourth of July celebrations. Although no official cause is established, Trump hinted at vandalism.
Dead grass remains visible, according to Tuesday’s observations.
White House’s Jefferson Columns and Upcoming Work
On Truth Social, Trump praised another renovation involving the Thomas Jefferson columns at the White House, terming it a success. Additionally, Trump shared projects aimed at beautifying Washington, D.C., including fixing lights, cleaning statues, rehabbing benches, and more.
Future Work and Expectations
Renovation work on the Reflecting Pool and surrounding areas is ongoing. The exact reopening date remains uncertain, but Trump hinted at reopening soon on Truth Social.
The project’s success hinges on resolving issues that have complicated the renovation’s rollout.
