Oliver Gilbert, Miami-Dade County Commissioner, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Frederica Wilson in Congress. With Wilson’s endorsement, Gilbert is set to represent Florida’s 24th Congressional District, a historically Democratic region.
This district spans South Florida, including a segment of Miami. Despite the state’s new congressional map, which added Miami Beach to a nearby district, the area remains a Democratic stronghold. Wilson, who has served in Congress since 2011 initially representing the 17th District, later ran for the 24th due to redistricting.
Renowned for her distinctive fashion, particularly her colorful wide-brimmed hats, Wilson’s departure led to a competitive primary with seven Democrats vying for her seat. Although House Democratic leaders have not actively engaged in the race, they are expected to support Gilbert.
Wilson’s endorsement of Gilbert was unequivocal. At a rally, she stated, “If I am endorsing you, everybody in District 24 should be endorsing you.” Despite the competition, this race did not align with the trend of intra-party disputes between establishment Democrats and far-left segments that marked the 2026 midterms.
Elsewhere, members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have been challenging moderate Democrats. In Florida, DSA member Oliver Larkin contested Rep. Jared Moskowitz in a district favoring Republicans due to redistricting.
Another notable challenge is from Elijah Manley, a self-described socialist, against Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Her campaign sparked controversy due to her run in a reshaped, majority-Black district; she secured victory in her race.
