Former Ukraine Defense Minister Calls for Elections Amid War

1 hour ago 0

On August 19, 2026, Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s former defense minister, voiced a demand for elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia. This bold step challenges President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s leadership while the country remains under martial law initiated in February 2022, when Russian forces invaded.

In a YouTube video, Fedorov stated, “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia.” He advocated for a “legal, safe, and realistic mechanism” to resume democratic processes even amid the war. “We are fighting precisely because we want to remain a free European state,” he emphasized.

Fedorov, ousted in July due to clashes with Zelenskyy’s top general, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had been instrumental in crafting a defense strategy utilizing drones and robotics. His dismissal sparked nationwide protests as many viewed him as a key figure in turning the war’s tide.

Before calling for elections, Fedorov emphasized in a CBS News interview that public protests against his removal reflect widespread support for democratic principles. He was noted for dramatically increasing Ukrainian attacks on Russian targets and strengthening the country’s military resources.

In the video, Fedorov did not disclose personal plans regarding participation in potential elections, although he previously expressed an interest in returning solely as defense minister. He acknowledged the challenges of voting during wartime, pointing out issues like ensuring participation for soldiers, civilians near front lines, and displaced Ukrainians. “This is complex,” he remarked, “but complexity does not mean impossibility.”
