Internal Reviews Highlight Failures in Detention Center Operations

8 minutes ago 0

An internal investigation into the death of Chaofeng Ge revealed significant policy breaches and staff errors at an immigration detention center managed by the Geo Group. Chaofeng Ge, who was previously incarcerated, passed away at a facility in Pennsylvania. His brother Yanfeng Ge, based in Queens, remembers him.

Chaofeng’s history included a suicide attempt prior to his transfer to the facility on July 31, 2025. Despite this critical information, his medical documentation was lost during the intake process, according to findings from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This omission meant the nurse conducting his screening was unaware of his previous suicide attempt and the fact that he had been prescribed antidepressant medication.

This case underscores the need for robust procedures in managing sensitive medical records, especially for individuals with known mental health challenges. The lack of proper communication and documentation at the facility contributed to the tragedy, highlighting areas in urgent need of reform.
