Authorities at Miami International Airport are managing a significant emergency situation following a cargo plane accident. On Sunday afternoon, an Amazon plane overran the runway, hit several vehicles, and caught fire during landing around 2 p.m. local time. This information comes from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and airport officials reporting to Fox News Digital.
The aircraft involved, known as Prime Air Flight 7598, overshot the diagonal runway and came to a stop at the northwest end of the airport. Fire officials confirmed that the plane caught fire post-crash. Over 60 fire units responded to handle the flames and assess those injured. The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue stated, “Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire due to this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing. Firefighters are working on extinguishing the fire and assessing patients.”
The number of injuries and fatalities has not yet been confirmed by authorities. An Amazon spokesperson acknowledged the incident, indicating the company is investigating. “We can confirm that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today,” the statement read.
Amazon assures the public that their main concern remains the safety and support of those affected. They are collaborating closely with local authorities to manage the situation. The FAA reported that the airplane, a Boeing 767-300, departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Emergency calls started coming in around 1:55 p.m.
The FAA remarked that Miami International Airport faced a ground stop, initially set to last until 4:30 p.m. Officials from the airport mentioned, “All runways and taxiways at MIA are currently closed as of 3:00 p.m. and a ground stop is in effect.” An investigation by the FAA is underway.
“We’ve issued a full ground stop at Miami International while first responders assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway. If you’re traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations,” explained Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in a post on X.
