Ed Sheeran’s Tour Controversy and Jack Antonoff’s Critique

1 hour ago 0

Ed Sheeran removed Macklemore from his tour following the rapper’s controversial pro-Palestine remarks during a performance. Macklemore’s statements on the Israel-Palestine conflict led to his exclusion from the tour. Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff criticized Sheeran for this decision, claiming the singer missed an opportunity to challenge billionaire interests.

Antonoff, known as the lead singer of Bleachers and a producer for Taylor Swift, spoke with The Guardian about the issue, expressing disappointment that Sheeran gave in to pressure instead of supporting Macklemore. Antonoff suggested Sheeran should have canceled the tour and performed free concerts outside the existing venues, using these events to raise funds.

“If you think it is controversial, you’re lost in some other sauce that is so crazy,” Antonoff told the media outlet. “They’re going to let some promoter dictate what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside.”

Among the voices against Macklemore’s participation was New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, reportedly one of the NFL team owners who threatened to block Sheeran’s stadium performances. Antonoff argued Sheeran should have defied such pressure, emphasizing the need to resist billionaire influence.

During a concert stop in Philadelphia, Sheeran addressed the controversy. He described recent events in Israel and Gaza as horrific and catastrophic, acknowledging the historical suffering involved. Other artists, like Finneas and Lukas Graham, showed solidarity by leaving the tour, while Macklemore launched a “Free Palestine Tour.”

Antonoff praised Macklemore’s courage, voicing his own support for a free Palestine and calling such declarations a “deeply human thing to say.”

Christian Toto, a film critic and founder of Hollywood in Toto, criticized Antonoff’s comments. He suggested Antonoff’s remarks were meant to gain favor within the entertainment industry, arguing they overlooked practical considerations about tour workers’ livelihoods.
