Travelers heading to Italy and Spain this week should brace for significant transportation disruptions due to impending worker strikes. Reports indicate that Spain’s rail passengers may experience delays and cancellations starting Thursday, Oct. 29, with train drivers participating in a 24-hour strike. Italy faces a nationwide strike on Friday, potentially impacting trains, flights, and other transport.
Spain’s Rail Strike
Train drivers, represented by the SEMAF union, have announced a strike against Renfe, Spain’s national passenger rail service. This strike is set to last from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. SEMAF has cited issues such as railway safety, working conditions, and unmet commitments as reasons for action.
“Renfe respects the right to strike but regrets the impact on travelers despite progress made in fulfilling obligations,” said Renfe in a press release.
The Spanish government mandated 73% of Renfe’s high-speed and long-distance trains, along with 65% of medium-distance trains, to operate under minimum service requirements during the strike. Renfe has contested the union’s reasons, stating that agreements to improve the rail system have been completed, and additional hiring and maintenance efforts are underway.
Italy’s Nationwide Strike
On Friday, Italy will see a general strike participate by transportation workers, causing potential disturbances across the country. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport detailed that rail workers will strike from 9 p.m. Thursday to 8:59 p.m. Friday. Furthermore, airport ground-handling workers in Florence and Pisa plan a separate 24-hour strike.
The USB union highlights concerns over living costs, wages, pensions, and opposition to military spending as reasons for the strike. Italy is witnessing broader unrest, with demonstrations prompting military deployment to Milan.
Travel Concerns
Travelers are questioning whether to proceed with their plans amid the strike threats. Many recommend checking whether specific trains fall under guaranteed services before altering travel arrangements. While no safety issues arise directly from the strikes, some travelers prefer to avoid uncertainty.
Fox News Digital has reached out to SEMAF, Renfe, and Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for comment. With disruptions looming, travelers are advised to stay informed and consider alternative arrangements.
