Widespread Wildfires Trigger Evacuations Across Western U.S. and Canada

Evacuation orders are active in various areas of the Western United States and Southwest Canada. These areas face extreme heat and dry conditions that fuel ongoing wildfires. The National Interagency Fire Center reported 183 new fires, including eight major ones, across the U.S. since Saturday. On Sunday, over 30,000 personnel with more than 640 crews were engaged in firefighting efforts. Firefighters were tackling more than 94 significant fires nationwide.

In Utah, active wildfires have devastated over 300,000 acres as of Sunday evening, prompting evacuations. The Rocky Canyon Fire, located roughly 30 miles northeast of Salt Lake City, expanded to more than 2,800 acres since its start on Friday. The fire was 0% contained by Sunday, causing evacuations in Morgan County.

Tragedy struck when two pilots lost their lives on Friday. Their helicopter crashed during an operation against the Widemouth 2 Fire in Fishlake National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service confirmed on Sunday. Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his sorrow online, honoring their bravery and sacrifice in protecting the state.

The Widemouth 2 fire has consumed over 118,000 acres, becoming the largest wildfire in Utah this year. It surpassed the Babylon Fire, which had burned over 107,000 acres. By Sunday morning, the Widemouth 2 fire was 27% contained.

In Oregon, bulldozer operator Jason Ensign tragically died battling the Wrights Spring Fire. The fire had spread over 33,000 acres and was 0% contained by Sunday afternoon. Other states, including Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado, are also contending with large fires.

In Spokane, Washington, at least 60,000 people were evacuated as fire crews worked on containing several blazes covering over 10,000 acres. Local fire officials noted significant progress in controlling the fires. They focused on eliminating any remaining heat sources that could reignite fires.

An abnormally dry and warm winter has contributed to a tough fire season.

In Canada, the British Columbia Wildfire Service reported over 100 active wildfires in the British Columbia province. High temperatures and wind gusts were expected to persist across the southeastern parts and the Okanagan region.

The service issued a warning on Sunday:

We are expecting a high potential for lightning-caused wildfire starts, particularly in the central Interior and the Okanagan, which are receiving limited precipitation and dry lightning. New ignitions during periods of hot and dry weather can establish and spread quickly.

A state of emergency has been declared in British Columbia, where the Bald Range wildfire led to over 20,000 evacuations. British Columbia Premier David Eby stated on social media:
