Trump’s Washington Arch Plan Includes Military Features

President Donald Trump announced plans on Sunday to transform his proposed triumphal arch near Arlington Memorial Bridge into a military complex. This facility will be capable of storing and rapidly deploying drones, snipers, and ammunition.

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated the modification was made at the “strong request” of the U.S. military, citing national security needs. However, he did not disclose which officials or service branches were involved or provide evidence of an official military request.

The announcement broadens the scope of a project initially presented as a monumental gateway and visitor attraction near Arlington National Cemetery. Questions arise concerning security, public access, approvals, and the storage of weapons at one of the nation’s most sensitive ceremonial locations.

Public planning documents describe a structure approximately 250 feet tall, clad in granite at Memorial Circle. The design includes a plaza, landscaping, utilities, traffic adjustments, lighting, and security features. The documents do not mention drones, sniper positions, or ammunition storage, raising uncertainty about whether the design and its federal reviews will need modification.

The National Park Service has indicated the previously described project would have no significant environmental impact. However, this indication does not represent a final decision or approval.
