Ukraine Restores Full Use of Starlink for Military Operations

Ukraine’s military has successfully regained full access to Starlink satellite links for its drones and other fast-moving equipment. This was confirmed by the country’s Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara on Saturday. The resolution ends speed restrictions that had reportedly hindered front-line operations for over a week.

The Defense Ministry’s monitoring systems in Ukraine have reported consistent connections for objects traveling at speeds exceeding 250 mph. This restoration is crucial for the operations of Starshield, the military-grade version of the Starlink satellite internet service. Starshield serves as a vital component of Ukraine’s drone operations and communications.

Last week’s limitations on Starshield had alarmed Ukraine’s military and government officials. They reported issues such as lost drones and disrupted missions. These disruptions occurred amid negotiations and agreements involving U.S. envoys aimed at ending the ongoing war. Russia has agreed to resume talks with Washington and Kyiv in the coming month. Additionally, a localized ceasefire has been established in the Oleshky region through the diplomatic efforts of First Lady Melania Trump.

This episode contributed to existing tensions between Kyiv and Washington. The relationship was already under strain due to a reported deal made by President Donald Trump regarding Russian diesel imports, which Ukraine perceived as a betrayal. Defense Minister Khmara attributed the resolution to ‘direct dialogue’ and the diplomatic efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Washington. Khmara emphasized that the restoration is of utmost importance for the military, particularly in terms of drone operations, logistics, and communications.

Despite this progress, President Zelenskyy noted on Friday that Ukraine continues to face speed limitations with Starlink and Starshield. Questions regarding who ordered the interruptions remain, with speculation about the involvement of SpaceX’s CEO, Elon Musk. Although Trump denied making the decision, CBS News reported that Musk himself was behind the disruption.
