On October 24, 2026, a suspect was detained in Germany after a fire erupted at Adolf Hitler’s mountain retreat, known as the Eagle’s Nest. The German police confirmed the arrest.
The fire was reported at the historical site, situated on the peak of Obersalzberg, around 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday. Officials from Upper Bavaria South police stated that when firefighters arrived, the Kehlsteinhaus was entirely engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the site was empty at the time, and there were no injuries.
Accessing the area proved challenging for fire trucks due to the local terrain, authorities noted. Images captured from a webcam after the fire on October 24, 2026, provided by Berchtesgaden/AFP via Getty Images, show the aftermath of the blaze in the Bavarian region.
A police statement mentioned that shortly after the fire started, investigators pinpointed a suspect, now under criminal investigation. The individual is currently in custody.
Eagle’s Nest, perched at 6,017 feet, was completed in 1938 and served occasionally as a temporary government seat for Hitler. The site remained mostly intact as it escaped Allied bombing during World War II.
Today, the location draws numerous visitors, functioning as both a tourist attraction and a dining venue. The Eagle’s Nest website describes it as “one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hitler era,” symbolizing the regime’s madness.
