Cam Brown: A Leader on and off the Field

Naperville North senior defender Cam Brown made his debut varsity start with more than just a new position; he carried a deep respect for being part of coach Jim Konrad’s team, the Huskies. “Wearing this jersey and being on this field where many greats have played with Konrad coaching is an honor,” Brown expressed. “We often discuss legacy and the pride of wearing the same jersey as those who came before us. This experience has truly developed me as a player.”

Brown is not only growing himself but is also helping numerous younger teammates mature as they gear up to defend their Class 3A state championship, despite having a mostly new lineup. His peers, most of whom are fresh to varsity play, elected him as a captain. “It’s great that the team chose him as a leader,” Konrad stated. “We saw it today; he leads vocally from the back, is positive, and holds others accountable. Cam’s work ethic is impressive, allowing him to guide effectively.”

In the Huskies’ 1-1 match against West Chicago, Brown was pivotal. He led a defense comprising seniors Liam McKenna, Luc and Alec Schwanebeck, junior Ziden Elganzouri, and sophomore midfielders Carter Joseph and Barrett Yeaman, all debuting in varsity.

Junior goalkeeper Misael Gonzalez noted Brown’s potential to become a key player. “Cam is a good teammate and captain. He supports me a lot in organizing the defense. Off the field, he’s equally impressive.” Gonzalez admires Brown’s commitment. “His communication with our back line stands out. He plays with a lot of energy.”

Last year, the Huskies triumphed over St. Laurence, 3-2 on penalties in a challenging championship game. Despite adverse weather, Brown played briefly in overtime and secured Naperville North’s crucial penalty kick. “The weather and atmosphere were intense, but creating those memories was unforgettable,” he reflected.

On repeating success, Brown is eager for the challenge. “I reached out to past leaders like Colin McMahon and Sam Hess for guidance. They led well, and I try to carry that forward with the new team.” Brown’s work embodies the Huskies’ principle: “Nothing without work.”

Coach Konrad remarked, “We emphasize doing small, often overlooked tasks, inspired by the All Blacks’ book ‘Legacy’. Cam excels in this, earning respect from his teammates.”

As a central defender, Brown enjoys his captaincy role. “Leading as a center back is fitting. It’s an honor.” He values continuing the program’s respected legacy. “Following in the footsteps of former Division I players and greats from our program is significant.”
