UFC 330 Delivers Intense Fights and Emotional Moments in Philadelphia

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her 115-pound championship for the first time with a unanimous decision over Gillian Robertson at UFC 330. This was the first of two championship fights on Saturday night. Dern, with a record of 17-5, had won the strawweight belt in her previous fight at UFC 321. The defense against Robertson was considered one-sided and uneventful, with scores of 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47.

After the fight, Dern expressed her desire to submit Robertson, stating, “I definitely wanted to submit her. That was the goal.” She nearly achieved this in the first round with a choke hold that almost forced Robertson, having a record of 17-9, to tap out. However, the round ended before she could complete the submission.

In the following four rounds, the pace slowed considerably as the fighters spent most of their time grappling on the canvas. The crowd’s excitement faded, leading to boos by the fifth round. Despite this, Dern’s daughter provided vocal support from the front row.

The excitement is set to continue as Islam Makhachev can break the UFC record for most consecutive wins if he defeats Ian Machado Garry in the main event. Makhachev, with a record of 28-1, matches UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva’s record of 16 straight victories. He captured the welterweight title by defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322.

The night also witnessed Edson Barboza’s retirement after a loss to Esteben Ribovics in a lightweight match. The 40-year-old fighter, emotional in the cage, received a standing ovation as he retired. Barboza, who began his MMA career in 2009 and debuted in UFC a year later, expressed pride in his efforts, saying, “Every single fight, I promise I did my best.” He left his gloves in the ring and received support from UFC announcer Bruce Buffer.

UFC 330 marked the organization’s third numbered event in Philadelphia and the first since 2019. Previous events in the city occurred in 2009 and 2011. Philadelphia fans, eager after the long break, filled the arena and brought high energy, especially during the preliminary fights.

Local fighter Jeremiah Wells, initially booed upon his entrance, won over the crowd by securing a submission victory. In another memorable moment, Tresean Gore won a fight but lost his front teeth from a flying knee. Despite the evident discomfort, he displayed his injured mouth to announcer Joe Rogan post-fight.

Charles Johnson added to the entertainment by leading the crowd in a celebratory “Fly, Eagles, Fly” song after his submission victory, receiving a warm ovation as he exited the cage.
