On Saturday morning in Tiger Point, Florida, a driver viewed his overturned truck in a flooded parking lot, a scene resulting from Hurricane Isaias’ landfall. The powerful storm, which hit the Gulf Coast as a Category 2 hurricane, resulted in significant damage across Florida and Alabama. At least two fatalities have been confirmed due to storm-related incidents.
Hurricane Isaias struck with 105 mph winds, toppling trees and causing power outages. Emergency officials continue to warn about the ongoing threat of flash floods, especially inland. In Escambia County, part of the Florida Panhandle, one person died after being trapped under a fallen tree. The local Sheriff’s Office noted the victim was inside their home when the tree collapsed.
Another fatality was reported in Jefferson County, Alabama, which includes Birmingham. Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Coker confirmed a tree fell on a single-family home, resulting in one death.
The storm prompted the closure of a Waffle House in Fort Walton Beach, marking Hurricane Isaias as the season’s first Atlantic hurricane. Efforts are underway to restore power to affected areas. By Saturday morning, around 780,000 customers in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia remained without electricity, although this number was higher earlier in the day.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted significant outages in counties such as Santa Rosa and Walton, with power restoration efforts involving 16,000 utility workers. Crews started their work in the early hours, aiming to clear roads and restore services. Major routes like I-10 and Route 98, along with state bridges, were reopened as of Saturday morning.
Hurricane Isaias initially made landfall near Destin, Florida, around 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday. It brought a storm surge of about 5 feet, somewhat less than the potential 6 to 9 feet forecasters had predicted if the storm had coincided with peak high tide. Following landfall, Isaias weakened to a post-tropical storm, with winds decreasing as it moved through Alabama.
In Jefferson County, multiple trees and power lines were reported down, prompting a local emergency management tweet advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Meanwhile, the storm impacted a wide range, reaching as far as Georgia by mid-morning Saturday, with forecasters warning of potential tornadoes.
