On July 24, 2026, President Donald Trump responded to a query regarding the ongoing cyclospora outbreak posed by Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy. This marks the president’s initial public comment on the outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak has affected at least 4,173 individuals, with 308 requiring hospitalization. The CDC is reviewing thousands more cases. Federal investigators have identified shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico as a common source, though additional investigations are ongoing to determine if other contaminated products also contributed.

The cyclospora parasite, known to cause severe gastrointestinal issues, is often linked to fresh produce. Experts note that unraveling such outbreaks can be complex and prolonged, as symptoms may not manifest immediately.

Previously, the White House claimed to have the outbreak under control, but President Trump had not personally addressed it until now. When asked about the safety of consuming lettuce, Trump replied, “I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it. This is the first time I’ve been asked that question. Are you eating lettuce recently?” His comment drew laughter as he noted, “nobody wants to ask that question.”
