U.S. Allegedly Withheld Warnings of Russian Missile Strikes on Ukraine

20 minutes ago 0

The United States may have deliberately held back early warnings about Russian missile strikes on Ukraine earlier this week, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine did not receive advance warning from its partners when Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv and other areas on Tuesday morning.

Sources revealed that American officials informed their Ukrainian counterparts that the system responsible for detecting Russian missile launches failed due to “bad weather.” However, Ukrainian officials, speaking anonymously because of the issue’s sensitivity, stated their disbelief regarding this explanation. They accused the U.S. of manipulating the system.

The early warning system seemed to function correctly when Russia launched another wave of missiles at approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday. Zelenskyy noted that Russia fired more than 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 attack drones targeting energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv, resulting in six deaths and leaving around 600,000 people without electricity.

On Tuesday, President Trump denied that America had ceased sharing intelligence with Ukraine, clarifying that the U.S. assists Ukraine to reach a resolution, aiming for the war’s end. Trump expressed intentions to end the conflict while continuing to provide intelligence support.

Russian strikes commenced shortly after Trump announced on social media that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire.” Previously, the Trump administration had threatened to stop sharing intelligence and halt European allies’ purchases of U.S. weapons via the PURL procurement system, contingent on Ukraine ceasing deep strikes against Russian energy infrastructure.

Ukraine heavily relies on U.S. intelligence for its military operations, including satellite data crucial for identifying Russian missile and aircraft launches. Sources insisted the incident was isolated, stating the U.S. had not stopped sharing intelligence altogether.

Reports from Ukrainian officials indicated Starlink, the SpaceX technology, exhibited operational challenges on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized Starlink’s significance for Ukrainian military communication. On October 14, SpaceX supposedly restricted its Starshield terminals, impacting Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense is coordinating with the U.S., SpaceX, and NATO partners to resolve the Starlink issues and establish backup communication channels. SpaceX, the White House, and the Pentagon are yet to respond to inquiries.

President Zelenskyy, visiting the United Kingdom, urged a strong U.S. response to the Russian strikes, criticizing Russia’s blatant disregard for American leadership and calls for international action.
