President Donald Trump has announced a new program aimed at exploring oil, gas, and mineral deposits on Greenland. He described Greenland as “our new and beautiful” territory, although it remains an autonomous part of Denmark.
This announcement comes on the heels of a security agreement signed in September. The agreement involves the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark, enhancing American military and security presence on the island. While Greenland remains self-governing under the Danish kingdom, the deal grants the U.S. access to its airspace and territory.
Months leading up to the agreement saw tensions, with Trump suggesting the U.S. might take control by force if necessary.
Trump shared on Truth Social that experts believe Greenland holds significant oil reserves, possibly outmatching any other region globally. He emphasized the island’s strategic importance for U.S. and European defense, stating it offers unparalleled security advantages.
“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived. It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the world,” Trump posted.
