Trump Highlights Energy and Tech Investments Amid Economic Concerns

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump announced significant investments in the energy and semiconductor sectors. This presentation of his economic agenda occurred shortly before a midterm rally in Arizona and amid ongoing voter dissatisfaction regarding living costs.

Trump revealed Taiwan’s plans to purchase $70 to $80 billion worth of liquefied natural gas from the proposed Alaska LNG project over the next two decades. Additionally, Taiwan is considering investing up to $4.4 billion in its development. Separately, Trump announced a $21 billion investment by semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries for two new manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York, backed by Japanese capital.

These announcements came as Trump faced significant voter dissatisfaction over economic conditions. According to an Associated Press-NORC poll, only 17% of American adults approved of Trump’s handling of living costs. Further, a Reuters/Ipsos survey indicated that about 78% of Americans attributed rising prices to Trump administration policies, including tariffs and the Iran conflict.

This voter frustration was heightened when the Labor Department reported a rise in inflation in September. Consumer prices increased by 0.6% from August and 3.7% from the previous year, up from 3.4% in August. Core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually. Gasoline prices saw a notable spike of 9.1% in September, contributing significantly to the monthly increase.

Despite these challenges, Trump emphasized these investment announcements as proof that his trade policies are generating substantial projects and jobs in the U.S. He stated that Taiwan’s commitment to the Alaska LNG project would account for approximately 30% of its output for the next 20 years. The Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed that state-owned CPC Corp. aims to purchase 6 million metric tons of LNG annually, with potential investment up to $4.4 billion. However, specific arrangements and agreements remain under negotiation.

Trump also mentioned South Korea’s previously stated interest in a $50 billion infrastructure investment in the Alaska project, though no final participation agreement has been reached.

The GlobalFoundries investment in New York is expected to create 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs and over 1,000 skilled manufacturing jobs. These roles correspond to new semiconductor manufacturing facilities planned for Malta, north of Albany.

Trump declared the Alaska LNG initiative as “the GREATEST Project in Alaska History” and a direct result of his presidency. He praised the New York investment as an “ALL-AROUND HUGE WIN FOR AMERICA,” portraying himself as a “great Businessman President” overseeing “the Greatest Economy in the World.”
