A separate incident in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, led to the death of a 26-year-old sheriff’s deputy, Katherine Frank. She was fatally wounded during a confrontation at a residence, which also left the suspect injured. Law enforcement reported that gunfire began 30 minutes after deputies arrived at the scene.

After three days in critical condition, Deputy Frank passed away surrounded by loved ones. She has been remembered by the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office for her professionalism and dedication to public service.

“Deputy Frank’s death is a significant loss to our agency and the broader law enforcement community around Sioux Falls,” the sheriff’s office stated.

The suspect, Brandon John Oetken from Sioux Falls, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault against law enforcement officers. He remains in custody without bond. Additional charges in connection with Frank’s death have not yet been determined. The shooting investigation is ongoing, led by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.

Flowers and tributes have been placed around Deputy Frank’s patrol vehicle at a memorial site, honoring her service and sacrifice.

In Memory of Deputy Katherine Frank

Deputy Frank joined the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office in 2024 after working at the South Dakota State Penitentiary. In a final act of giving, she became an organ donor. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley commemorated Frank, remarking on her courage and dedication to public safety.

“We mourn the loss of Deputy Katherine Frank, who sacrificed everything in the line of duty to keep us safe,” said Attorney General Jackley.
