Minnesota Senate Race Heats Up as Tafoya Challenges Flanagan

33 minutes ago 0

The Republicans are eyeing a potential Senate seat gain in Minnesota. GOP nominee Michele Tafoya is closing in on Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, which has led Fox News to adjust the race’s classification in favor of the Republicans just weeks ahead of Election Day. It’s been almost 25 years since Republicans secured a Senate win in this state.

Michele Tafoya, previously known for her work as an NFL sideline reporter, is targeting a victory by capturing the seat currently occupied by retiring Democratic Senator Tina Smith. A Minnesota Star Tribune/KARE 11 poll reveals Tafoya is only trailing by four percentage points. Fox News Power Rankings have reclassified the race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat.

The more Minnesotans learn about me and my opponent, and see what my opponent has failed to do over the last eight years alongside Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, they are understanding Minnesota needs change. We need fresh ideas, we need an independent thinker, and they are jumping on board. — Michele Tafoya, in an interview with Fox News Digital

The Democratic candidate’s campaign did not respond at the time of publishing. The race unfolds as Minnesota faces a major welfare assistance fraud scandal, drawing national attention. As a result, Governor Tim Walz opted not to run for re-election. This issue plays a crucial role in Tafoya’s campaign.

Tafoya has criticized the administration for what she calls historic fraud while Flanagan, as second-in-command, has dealt with significant fraud affecting services intended for vulnerable populations such as children, autistic individuals, and seniors.

Flanagan acknowledges the public frustration over the scandal and claims more preventive measures could have been enacted earlier. She distanced herself from Walz, who has accepted blame.

Republican strategist Kirsten Kukowski emphasized how Flanagan faces considerable criticism due to her involvement with the administration, noting heightened media coverage and polling data that favor Tafoya.

In addition to the fraud scandal, Tafoya is addressing incidents of gang-related violence in the Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs. Her recent announcement of a plan to tackle this problem further distinguishes her from Flanagan.

Flanagan, with support from progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary against a more moderate opponent. Meanwhile, Tafoya secured over half the GOP primary votes, backed by national Republicans like Sen. Tim Scott.

Despite Thune’s campaign assistance, the Senate Leadership Fund, a key GOP super PAC, has yet to make significant financial contributions. Tafoya states she’s satisfied with grassroots support and believes her campaign’s focus on ideas will lead to success.

Democrats are hopeful that prominent figures like Sen. Amy Klobuchar could bolster Flanagan’s campaign. Democratic communications director Lauren French criticized Republican efforts as last-ditch strategies.

Flanagan often associates Tafoya with former President Donald Trump, disapproving of his high disapproval ratings in Minnesota. However, Tafoya distances herself by highlighting her pro-choice stance in a new ad, asserting her independence from party lines.

Despite expressing reservations, some Republican figures like Mercedes Schlapp criticized her ad, yet Trump encouraged support for Tafoya during a rally.
