A tragic accident occurred at Taliesin West, an architectural landmark designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, resulting in the death of Rogério Renato Mateucci. The incident took place around 2 p.m. on a Friday when strong winds caused a piece of roofing material to detach, striking Mateucci in the head.
Mateucci, who was 55 years old, served as the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Brazil. He was part of a walking tour visiting the historic site when the accident happened. Witnesses reported that he died instantly, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Joe Spector, CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, expressed condolences to Mateucci’s family and friends. The foundation has closed Taliesin West to the public temporarily. The Scottsdale Police Department is investigating the incident but has shared no further details out of respect for privacy.
The university Mateucci led mourned his passing. It canceled classes and suspended administrative operations for several days. Vidal Martins, vice rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, remembered Mateucci as a kind, religious person who made significant contributions to his community.
