As North Carolina gears up for the new football season under Bill Belichick, off-field issues are drawing attention. The focus is currently on an investigation involving General Manager Michael Lombardi. Earlier this week, UNC confirmed Lombardi’s leave pending a probe. The investigation formally began on Thursday.
Details remain unclear. Belichick avoided discussing the impact of Lombardi’s absence on the team, stating, “We’re working through some things.” He emphasized focusing on current tasks without addressing specifics.
The University of North Carolina’s statement noted that the investigation follows concerns leading to Lombardi’s leave on July 27. The Office of University Counsel is conducting the inquiry.
The investigation is classified as a human resources issue without a set timeline. Athletic Director Steve Newmark emphasized a thorough process while hoping for a swift resolution. “We want to ensure the process is done properly, gathering necessary information,” Newmark stated. He declined to comment on other reports involving a separate investigation by the College Sports Commission.
Chancellor Lee Roberts expressed frustration regarding the ongoing focus on Lombardi instead of the student-athletes. “It’s distressing to address this,” Roberts said, emphasizing the focus should be on student success.
Despite the turmoil, the Tar Heels’ football performance under Belichick is also notable. They ended with a 4-8 record during his first year as coach.
Lombardi, represented by attorney Tom Mars, is requesting patience from the public. Mars released a statement saying Lombardi hasn’t been informed about the investigation details and looks forward to timely and fair proceedings. Mars added that Lombardi wishes the process to run its course before any conclusions are drawn.
