The Southwest United States is preparing for another wave of heavy rains and thunderstorms. Over the past few days, persistent rain prompted evacuations and water rescues following a flood watch issued by the National Weather Service for the Four Corners region, where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah converge.
Flood Risks Persist
According to meteorologist Andrew Kozak, ongoing torrential rains and storms threaten to flood roads, small streams, narrow canyons, and areas already damaged by previous wildfires. These weather patterns are expected to move across the central and northern Plains Sunday night, reaching the Upper Midwest by Monday.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that the water levels in the San Juan River rose significantly overnight. The San Juan River Bridge remains closed due to flooding. Footage from CBS Colorado showed a home in Pagosa Springs almost entirely submerged.
The Animas River in Durango, Colorado, stayed closed on Saturday, highlighting the ongoing flood risks in the region. Local resident Chris Mott shared video evidence of the severe flooding, expressing frustration as sandbags and other preparations were overwhelmed by the rising waters.
Challenges Faced by Residents
In San Juan County, New Mexico, around four feet of water flooded the home of Sheriff Shane Ferrari. Despite the situation stabilizing on Sunday, residents are dealing with significant damage and debris cleanup. Devin Neeley, the county spokesperson, noted the absence of official damage numbers or reports on evacuations. However, he confirmed no loss of life was reported.
Floodwaters have started to recede but left behind mud and silt, some contaminated by sewage due to wastewater plant failures. Power outages are widespread, and restoring electricity could take several days, according to Neeley.
“It’s a pretty active disaster zone,” Neeley observed, indicating that recovery might take time.
The affected area previously endured two months of intermittent heavy rains due to tropical moisture from the Pacific. Prior flooding events also impacted the Grand Canyon and regions in New Mexico, compounding the challenges faced by residents.
