Cody Johnson, a Texas-born country music star, refused to abandon his signature cowboy hat for a Nashville record deal. Executives suggested a shift to a baseball cap, implying a need to change his style for success. Johnson walked away from the deal, choosing to remain true to himself.
Johnson explained in an interview on ‘CBS Mornings’ that he was upset by the industry’s approach, which seemed to demand a change in his identity. “They wanted a baseball cap, which I have nothing against, but it was the approach,” he stated.
Instead of conforming, Johnson embarked on a decade-long journey to build his career. He performed in bars and honky-tonks, staying committed to his cowboy roots. This decision led him through years of financial struggle and constant travel away from his family.
Initially, Johnson aspired to be a rodeo star, but injuries led him to shift his focus to music. He shared his early experience of selling CDs in rodeo parking lots, trying to establish a fan base. Throughout those years, he wrestled with self-doubt about achieving stardom and owning a cattle ranch.
Despite challenges, Johnson resolved to persevere with his career on his own terms. He described facing financial pressure and long separations from his family while maintaining determination. “No matter what, no matter how hard, no matter how high the mountain, I will not back down. I will not quit,” he declared.
Eventually, Johnson’s dedication paid off. Record labels returned with new offers that accepted his authentic image. Now a prominent country artist, Johnson retains his cowboy style while performing to sold-out arenas nationwide.
Johnson’s journey in the music industry showcases his adherence to authenticity. He is married to his wife Brandi, with whom he shares three children. Their family life stands strong as he continues his career.
