At least 12 people were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee. The incident occurred on Saturday night, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.
The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. close to the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets. Authorities reported that 12 individuals were injured, with 11 sustaining gunshot wounds. Law enforcement confirmed that one victim is in critical condition, two others sustained serious injuries, and eight are stable.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence E. Revell shared during a news conference that the victims comprised six adults and six juveniles, with the youngest being 11 years old. He expressed the community’s sentiments, stating, “Tonight, our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they face the devastating impact of this violence.” Revell highlighted the painful reality of children being among the injured and applauded the quick actions of officers who risked their safety to transport victims to the hospital.
“Their actions were nothing short of heroic and reflect the courage and compassion our officers bring to this community every day,” Revell said.
Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting followed a physical altercation involving two or three people, which police have described as an isolated incident. As of the latest update, no arrests have been made.
The shooting coincided with Florida A&M University’s Homecoming Week, an event where students and alumni gathered in Tallahassee. The university clarified that the incident happened nearby and confirmed that the campus remains secure, urging individuals to avoid the area for investigation purposes.
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey extended his condolences: “This is a truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy,” he wrote on social media. His message emphasized community solidarity with the Florida A&M family.
Currently, detectives from the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit are actively investigating the matter. Authorities are appealing to any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward.
