New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo gained a reputation for aggressive play on the field. On Sunday, his approach was questioned during a game against the Houston Texans. NFL officials indicated that Skattebo went too far in his attempt to run over a Texans player.
Cam Skattebo, wearing number 44, was involved in a pivotal moment during the game’s first half. He attempted to leap over Texans safety M.J. Stewart and was subsequently tackled by linebacker Henry To’oto’o. This action drew attention not just because of its physicality, but also due to the penalty it incurred.
Skattebo took a handoff from quarterback J.J. McCarthy, found an opening, and lowered his helmet as he moved past a defender. His collision with safety M.J. Stewart led to a flag being thrown. Skattebo was penalized for unnecessary roughness due to lowering his helmet.
The incident raised questions about what Skattebo was supposed to do in such situations. Normally, helmet-to-helmet interactions are flagged if a defenseless player is involved, or when a defender leads with their helmet on a tackle. Even Giants head coach John Harbaugh appeared baffled by the call.
The Giants and Texans were locked in a close contest during Week 7. Both teams were tied at 14 points each by halftime.
Skattebo’s playing time had come under scrutiny recently. He did not carry the ball at all against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. The Giants’ decision seemed to imply dissatisfaction with Skattebo’s performance. However, Harbaugh argued otherwise.
Harbaugh stated, “It wasn’t by design for him not to carry the ball. We didn’t call any runs when he was in. We focus on giving all our backs equal chances and seeing who can get a hot hand. We did not anticipate being down by 24 points.”
Despite previous fumble issues, Skattebo returned to play in Week 7. He aimed to prove his value to both teammates and coaches as he regained his spot in the offense.
