Millions of Americans will receive Social Security payments this week. Beneficiaries may receive up to $5,181 in monthly checks, depending on their lifetime earnings and the age they began claiming benefits.
Payment Schedule Details
The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a staggered payment schedule tied to beneficiaries’ birth dates. Payments are not all distributed on the same day.
The next payment round in June is set for the fourth Wednesday: June 24. This date will see payments for those born between the 21st and 31st of any month.
- June 10: Payment for birthdays between the 1st and 10th.
- June 17: Payment for birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- June 24: Payment for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Exceptions apply to those who began benefits before May 1997, who receive payments on the third day of each month. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments differ, usually issued on the first of the month. June’s SSI was paid on June 1.
Understanding Social Security Benefits
Social Security retirement benefits are based on work history. To qualify, individuals must earn credits by paying Social Security taxes, typically requiring 40 lifetime credits, equivalent to about 10 years of work.
Retirement benefits can be claimed starting at age 62, although early claiming results in reduced payments. The program also offers disability and survivor benefits, aiding workers who become disabled and families of deceased workers.
The maximum Social Security retirement benefit in 2026 at full retirement age is $4,152 per month. Higher amounts, like $5,181, are possible for those meeting strict earnings criteria and delaying benefits. The average monthly benefit is estimated at $2,071 in 2026 following the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), a 2.8 percent increase to address inflation.
If Payment Doesn’t Arrive
If your Social Security payment is delayed, the SSA advises:
- Wait three more mailing days after your scheduled payment for potential delivery delays.
- Contact your bank if payments are due via direct deposit to confirm pending status.
- Double-check the scheduled payment using your birth date or benefit type.
- If unresolved, report to the SSA by calling 1‑800‑772‑1213 or visiting a local office for assistance.
Delays typically stem from timing or processing lapses, and most issues resolve within days.
SSI Program Insight
SSI is a separate, needs-based program for individuals with limited income and resources. Eligibility covers those aged 65+, blind, or with qualifying disabilities, matching specific financial thresholds.
Unlike Social Security retirement benefits, SSI doesn’t require a work history. Maximum federal SSI payments in 2026 are $994 monthly for individuals and $1,491 for couples, subject to income and living conditions.
Upcoming Payments
The next payment cycle commences in July, following the same staggered schedule based on birth dates.
