Two drones were recently observed flying over a German military base, days after a drone carrying explosives was discovered at a cargo airport. The German Armed Forces confirmed these occurrences on Saturday.
Surveillance Details
Security surveillance at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich reported the sighting of two drones at about 10 p.m. Thursday. The German Joint Force Command released a statement verifying these sightings. Military police forces were deployed to the location.
The Euskirchen police department has started an investigation. However, they have not provided any comments yet. Additionally, the military did not disclose further details about the incidents.
A spokesperson confirmed the drone sightings at Bleiberg Barracks in Mechernich, showcasing images of the entrance of the barracks.
Frequent Drone Sightings
Reports of drone sightings at civilian and cargo airports have become more common. Last year, mysterious drone flights disrupted the airspace of several European Union member countries, leading to alarm among authorities and the public. This resulted in dozens of flight cancellations, affecting thousands of passengers.
Earlier this week, explosives were found on a drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a crucial hub for international freight. This incident was assessed by U.S. officials to be of Russian origin. Fortunately, the device was safely defused.
Leipzig/Halle Airport hosts NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), operational nearly every day to deliver equipment to NATO battle groups along the eastern flank, stretching from Finland to Romania, aiding EU and allied missions.
Rising Concerns Over Russian Actions
The drone incidents arise as U.S. intelligence suggests that Russian President Vladimir Putin might authorize provocative actions extending to NATO territories, according to briefed U.S. officials.
Western officials have blamed Russia and proxies for staging numerous attacks, including drone incursions into Romania. An increase in suspected sabotage and cyber operations has been noted across Europe since Russia’s extensive invasion of Ukraine over four years ago.
The Russian Embassy in Germany dismissed the Leipzig drone event as part of a “new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.”
