Haitian Nationals Face Deportation Risks as TPS Ends

She is one of over 300,000 Haitian nationals who previously received Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which the Trump administration ended recently. The administration cited improved conditions in Haiti as the reason for the program’s termination.

As TPS expired, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) prepared to increase its efforts to arrest and deport Haitian migrants. This was confirmed by two ICE sources and federal documents. The woman in question, interviewed by CBS News, has lived in the U.S. since she was six years old and has no remaining family in Haiti.

Originally, TPS was established for Haitians escaping violence in their country. However, the program has closed despite a Level 4 travel advisory from the State Department, advising against travel to Haiti. A recent United Nations report highlighted that there were 613 gang-related killings in Haiti between March and July. Basic services have been halted in areas affected by violence.

Florida hosts one of the largest Haitian communities in the country. A recent image captured by Getty Images showed a man by a mural at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami. The streets of Little Haiti are now deserted, and the community is in distress.

The woman expressed her concerns, saying, “I wouldn’t have anywhere to go” if deported. She emphasized that pursuing legal status involves a temporary process, despite TPS’s temporary nature. Due to her TPS expiration, she lost her job and may soon lose her health insurance. Her high-risk pregnancy requires weekly medical appointments, which she may not afford.

Her partner is a U.S. citizen, and the baby will be American, regardless of where it is born. “Yes, I do feel like I’m American,” she noted, highlighting her long-time residence in the U.S. For safety, she only leaves her home for essential doctor visits, a practice she considers stopping soon.
