Doug Lang Appointed as Portage’s New Parks Superintendent

Doug Lang, former Property Manager at Indiana Dunes State Park, has been appointed as the new parks superintendent for Portage. Lang began his new role on Thursday, marking a significant change in the management of the city’s parks.

Park Board President Andy Maletta spoke positively about Lang’s appointment, emphasizing the board’s intention to give Lang the leadership space he requires. “Our goal is for you to take a leadership role and for us to get out of your way,” Maletta remarked.

Portage Mayor Austin Bonta announced Lang’s hiring, expressing confidence in Lang’s capabilities. “We had some great candidates apply, but he was absolutely the best,” Bonta stated. “He’s fantastic at what he does.”

Bonta lauded Lang’s character, experience, vision, and leadership. He highlighted that the city’s parks are crucial to the quality of life in Portage, with a fresh wave of investments commencing. “With Superintendent Lang stepping into this role, I’m very excited about the future our parks are heading for,” Bonta added.

Notably, the tenure of previous park superintendents in Portage has been short-lived, a challenge that Lang’s experience aims to overcome. Maletta noted, “When you look at Doug’s experience, that’s something our last couple have not had.” Experience and leadership skills were critical attributes sought by the Park Board.

Lang brings a wealth of experience to the role, including managing events, overseeing the grounds of a top Indiana state park, and leading staff. During his interview, Lang impressed the board with his knowledge of the city’s park system. “He’s got a 30-, 60-, 90-day plan,” remarked Maletta, signaling Lang’s strategic approach to his new role.
