Second Story Ranch: A Vision for Addiction Recovery in Crete

State Senator Patrick Joyce supports the live-in addiction recovery center at a 68-acre horse ranch in Crete due to its founder Jim O’Connor’s dedication. Joyce, a Democrat from Essex, praised O’Connor’s energy and commitment, noting that he frequently shared his story of alcohol recovery, which inspired the center.

O’Connor owns the property at the corner of East Bemes Road and South Klemme Road, named Second Story Ranch. Joyce encouraged O’Connor to present his vision to other lawmakers, believing the state should support such initiatives. In December, O’Connor launched a public capital campaign to construct facilities, including housing for 30 men in recovery, a communal lodge, and homes for leadership.

The state has earmarked $2 million for Second Story Ranch. O’Connor plans to start construction in the fall, completing it in two phases. While grateful for the state’s support, O’Connor remains focused on using the funds wisely, alongside additional donations and grants.

“The grant award does a lot of things,” O’Connor said. “It’s validation that other people share our vision for recovery.”

With the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s grant, O’Connor aims to begin building staff housing and essential infrastructure. He plans to seek another $3 million in state-distributed opioid settlement funds to complete the larger lodge and participant residences. If successful, the program could be operational by 2027.

O’Connor is also helping those in recovery through partnerships with the Recovery Community of Joliet. He provides paid work opportunities at the ranch, fostering a supportive environment. His goal is to offer a program that helps individuals achieve self-sufficiency and independence.

Second Story Ranch will be a free option for individuals eligible for Medicaid through state partnerships. Donations to support the project can be made through GoFundMe by searching for Second Story Foundation charity.
