Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence from public view has stirred questions in Iranian political circles about the true leadership of the country. This situation has allowed visible divisions to grow. Iranian officials were seen standing next to the coffin of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died on the first day of the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
When Iranian leaders and senior military commanders gathered to honor the deceased supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the event was designed to project unity, strength, and endurance following the conflict with the United States and Israel. The elaborate, weeklong funeral began on Friday.
A military band performed an anthem as officials who had not appeared together publicly since the conflict’s onset walked side by side. This included the president, the speaker of Parliament, the judiciary’s head, and top generals from the Revolutionary Guards Corps. Yet, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who took over as the new supreme leader, was notably absent. He has not been seen in public since his appointment in March.
The funeral offered a temporary break from the turbulent period preceding it, characterized by open, hostile disputes among senior Iranian officials and notable political figures over negotiations with the United States. These officials exchanged accusations of delusion, treason, coup planning, and disobeying or manipulating the new supreme leader.
“I spit on this era where they kill our leader and then we speak of peace with the United States,” a hard-line strategist, Hassan Rahimpour-Azghadi, exclaimed at a rally in Tehran. Instead of talks, he advocated for revenge.
In response to the discord, Ayatollah Khamenei attempted to calm tensions with a carefully worded written statement. However, this only intensified the situation. Hard-line supporters have consistently demanded the supreme leader’s public appearance or an audio message, asserting they will relent only under such conditions.
