Russia Responds to Ukraine’s Attack on Black Sea Hub

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a threat to seize European ships if European nations begin capturing Russian merchant vessels. This comes after Ukraine launched a significant attack on a crucial Russian Black Sea naval and commercial hub. Simultaneously, Moscow has been conducting extensive naval exercises in the Pacific.

The conflict at sea is intensifying. Ukraine is targeting one of Russia’s key naval and export locations in the Black Sea, while Moscow cautions it may confiscate European vessels and displays its naval strength in the Pacific Ocean. Although these incidents are not directly connected, they illustrate how the war is spreading beyond the front lines to strategic ports and global shipping routes.

Ukraine’s Attack on Novorossiysk

Ukraine targeted the port city of Novorossiysk in a major drone attack overnight, which disrupted two vital grain terminals. According to Russian industry sources cited by Reuters, Novorossiysk is not only a significant Black Sea export hub but also serves as a base for Russian warships that were moved there following persistent Ukrainian assaults on its Black Sea Fleet in Crimea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took responsibility for the operation against the Novorossiysk naval base. He described it as “the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.” In a statement on X, Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine utilized Palianytsia jet-powered drones, Neptune missiles, and unmanned naval systems, claiming successful hits on air-defense systems, piers, and port infrastructure.

“The occupation fleet and all the infrastructure supporting it will not be safe as long as Russian aggression continues,” Zelenskyy stated.

In the larger wave of attacks, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar region reported that at least two people, including an 8-year-old, were killed. Novorossiysk Mayor Andrei Kravchenko reported damage to over two dozen residential buildings, four businesses, and educational institutions; the city’s water supply was also suspended. Reuters noted that Chicago wheat futures increased by about 3% due to concerns over possible disruptions to Russian grain exports.

Putin’s Pacific Fleet Warning

Thousands of miles away, near Sakhalin, Putin appeared on the Russian missile cruiser Varyag while watching Pacific Fleet exercises, where he issued a caution to European governments intensifying scrutiny over Russia’s so-called shadow fleet.

The European Union expanded sanctions on hundreds of ships, detaining some vessels and crews for inspection. Some European nations are considering stricter maritime enforcement against ships suspected of evading sanctions, according to Reuters.

“Attempts to seize Russian vessels & sell off our property are outright piracy,” Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Putin on X. “If such plans are implemented, Russia will respond in kind – wherever we deem necessary, including within the Pacific Fleet’s area of responsibility.”

These warnings occurred alongside widespread Russian naval exercises. The drills covered the Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, and Northwest Pacific, involving over 13,000 personnel and approximately 60 ships, submarines, and support vessels. The Russian Defense Ministry separately listed around 30 participating aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned systems.

Ongoing Tensions and Global Responses

Russian forces were seen launching anti-ship missiles during the drills. Bastion coastal missile systems fired Oniks cruise missiles at simulated enemy ships from Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, while the corvette Smerch fired a Uran anti-ship cruise missile.

Putin also criticized NATO for broadening its presence in the Asia-Pacific and Arctic regions. He highlighted new military alliances and planned weapons deployments, asserting they are heightening the potential for conflict.

As tension persists, Russia reportedly struck the Ukrainian port of Odesa. Separately, a Russian attack reportedly set fire to a shopping mall in Zaporizhzhia. This continues to emphasize the pressure on ports and logistics as the conflict continues beyond four and a half years.

In related developments, Romanian naval forces reportedly destroyed two suspected Russian Gerbera drones over the Black Sea. NATO’s North Atlantic Council convened to address Russian airspace violations in Poland and Romania, alongside the latest drone incidents. A NATO spokesperson confirmed that allies condemned Russian actions, expressed solidarity with affected nations, and reaffirmed support for Ukraine.
