Climber Survives Harrowing Fall on Mount Shasta

A climber from California, Zubayir Kazi, shared his experience of surviving a 500-foot fall down Mount Shasta. The 24-year-old man from San Jose reached the summit on September 10. However, his descent turned into a terrifying ordeal.

“Everything I had with me just goes out of my hand and I find myself flying down the mountain,” Kazi explained.

During the descent, Kazi lost all his supplies, including his food, water, cellphone, and light. This left him with no means to communicate or signal for help.

Kazi described his mindset at that time. “My mentality became very one dimensional. I don’t know what’s the optimal thing to do, but I just know that I have to go lower because if I stay here and fall asleep, I’m going to die,” he said.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, Kazi lost control while glissading down the snow and ice-covered Avalanche Gulch post-summit. He sustained serious injuries, including significant lacerations.

Due to swelling, Kazi removed his boots and crawled through the night, eventually reaching Horse Camp Cabin. His friends, concerned about losing contact with him, reported his absence, which led to a coordinated search effort.

A hiker found Kazi in the cabin the next day, offering him food and water before rescuers arrived.

Upon rescue, officers noted the severity of his injuries. “You have no skin behind your leg,” they said, highlighting the extent of his trauma.

Kazi suffered substantial skin and nerve damage, alongside severe internal issues. Medical professionals informed him that he narrowly escaped death.

The Forest Service commended Kazi for knowing his route and notifying friends about his plans. They emphasized the importance of climbers carrying backup devices, ensuring sufficient daylight for the climb, and preparing for self-rescue.

Kazi reflected on his experience, stating, “It is very important to fully and properly account for all of the requirements and safety considerations necessary to complete a hike like this and not miss a single one — and I’d say to definitely not go alone.”
