President Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had reached an energy ceasefire, with Russia agreeing to supply diesel fuel to the global marketplace. He shared the news on Truth Social, emphasizing the importance of not breaking the agreement.
Previously, Trump had brokered a similar ceasefire in September, wherein both nations agreed not to target each other’s energy infrastructure. This latest announcement follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for such a ceasefire during an interview on ABC News’s “This Week.”
Zelensky described the deal as fair but not ideal, pointing out that the best outcome would be to prevent conflict entirely. He expressed willingness to stop attacking Russian diesel interests if the safety of Ukraine’s energy facilities could be guaranteed.
“The first step is ceasefire, energy ceasefire. OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this. Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children.”
Despite the announcement, reports emerged that Russia struck a Ukrainian power plant shortly afterward. Zelensky later told Fox News that while he supports a ceasefire, he questioned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s commitment to this resolution.
