15 minutes ago 0

After 18 impactful seasons in the WNBA, Los Angeles Sparks icon Nneka Ogwumike has officially announced her retirement at the end of this season. The 36-year-old player shared her decision during a conversation with Taylor Rooks on ‘Boardroom Talks’. In addition to her on-court accomplishments, Ogwumike serves as the President of the Women’s National Basketball Association. She expressed feeling ‘very fulfilled’ and ‘proud’ to retire.

Ogwumike stated, ‘I’ve learned there’s power in knowing when to walk away. Strength was about pushing forward for many years. Now, it means recognizing when you feel complete. I’m grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I’ve poured into it.’

Ogwumike’s career began with the Sparks in 2012, where she quickly made her mark by winning Rookie of the Year. Over the years, she established herself as one of the greats in the league. Her notable achievements include winning a championship in 2016, the same year she was named WNBA MVP.

Her accolades are numerous. She was an 11-time WNBA All-Star, including this recent Sparks season, and made the WNBA All-Defensive First Team four times. As of now, she ranks in the top five all-time for points scored with 7,484. She is well-positioned to surpass Tina Thompson for fourth place, needing only four more points.

Ogwumike will retire as the third all-time leader in career rebounds with 3,565. Furthermore, she is the Sparks’ all-time leader in scoring, field goals made, steals, and double-double performances. Her significance to the WNBA and its growth is monumental.

Her retirement announcement comes at a challenging time for the Sparks, as they are in a losing season with a current 12-23 record. The recent trade of Kelsey Plum to the Phoenix Mercury has not lifted the team’s prospects for postseason play. Nevertheless, Ogwumike’s influence extends far beyond this season. Her legacy of success and leadership will continue to inspire players and contribute to the league’s development.

With at least nine games left in the season, the Sparks have opportunities to honor Ogwumike. Their next game will see them host Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night.
