The summer NFL training camps are in full swing, marked by intense competition and high stakes. Players are under pressure to secure roster spots amid high temperatures, leading to heightened aggression during joint practices.
The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints’ joint practice in Oxnard, California exemplified this tension. Reports indicate several altercations occurred during the session.
“Right now,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer commented, referring to the chaotic practice, “I’m in charge of fight club.”
Fights broke out as players exchanged punches, a decision questioned given the protective gear players wear. Some opted to remove opponents’ helmets during the confrontations. Video footage captured Cowboys’ Donovan Ezeiruaku and Caelen Carson throwing punches, leading to Ezeiruaku’s removal from practice. Additionally, Saints center Erik McCoy launched a helmet in frustration.
Pete Werner, a Saints linebacker, acknowledged the need for solidarity among players but stressed the importance of maintaining composure. “…You want your guys protecting each other,” he said, “but there’s a part of it that’s good. Other part where it’s, ‘Let’s be smart here. Let’s get this moving.'”
Coaches expressed disappointment over the incidents, emphasizing the importance of professionalism to develop skills. “Nobody wants this,” Schottenheimer remarked, labeling the events as “unfortunate.”
These joint practices have replaced preseason games for veterans, allowing them to face other starters in a controlled setting, typically without such disruptions.
The Cowboys and Saints will not have another session together, as the Saints plan to practice with the Rams next.
