Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike announced her retirement after the current WNBA season. This marks the conclusion of one of the league’s most distinguished careers. At 36, Ogwumike has made the decision after 15 impactful seasons.

Ogwumike, an eight-time All-WNBA forward, shared her plans on Wednesday during an interview with Boardroom Talks. “I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level,” she said. Despite her initial uncertainty about her potential in the league, her career far exceeded her own expectations.

Selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft from Stanford, she quickly made her mark by earning the Rookie of the Year honors with the Los Angeles Sparks. In 2016, she achieved her career pinnacle by being named league MVP while guiding the Sparks to a WNBA championship.

Former teammate Alana Beard praised Ogwumike’s unique blend of attributes. “Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose, and grace,” Beard commented. “For 15 seasons, we’ve watched her give everything to this game, not only as an elite competitor but as a leader who has helped shape the league and lift up the people around her.”

This season, Ogwumike participated in the All-Star Game for the 11th time, maintaining an average of almost 17 points per game. She mentioned a sense of tranquility as she steps back from professional play. “It is a little bit my body: I still feel very good,” she stated. “But I also feel the comfort of slowing down a little bit. I just feel content. I feel very content with where I’ve left my career.”

Ogwumike also highlighted her satisfaction with the current state of women’s basketball. As president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), she played a key role in negotiating a transformative collective bargaining agreement earlier this year.

Terri Carmichael Jackson, executive director of the WNBPA, commended Ogwumike for her significant contributions as a leader. “She has served this union with a level of commitment, courage, integrity, and purpose that is truly unparalleled,” Carmichael Jackson stated. Ogwumike’s leadership focused on advancing both the game and its business for current and future players.
