Novo Nordisk announced a significant reduction in the U.S. list prices for its popular diabetes and weight-loss medications, Ozempic and Wegovy. Rheumatologist Dr. Mahsa Tehrani shared insights about this decision on ‘America Reports.’
In recent months, a new weight-loss trend emerged, involving a mixture of warm water and unflavored gelatin consumed before meals. Promoted on social media as a cost-effective appetite suppressant, its effects are likened to those of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. However, experts advise caution.
New Jersey-based dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade explained that when gelatin reaches the stomach, it forms a thicker mixture that increases volume and thickness. This expansion stretches the stomach wall, signaling fullness to the brain, and the protein in gelatin triggers a gut hormone that slows eating.
“Once the gelatin reaches your stomach, the acidic environment helps it form a thicker, semi-gelled mixture that increases the volume and thickness of what’s sitting in your stomach.”
Palinski-Wade warned against comparing gelatin to prescription medications like semaglutide, stating the resemblance is exaggerated. Gelatin influences food-triggered hormone responses but doesn’t mimic medications at the receptor level nor convey fat-burning properties.
While gelatin can aid in reducing calorie intake, relying on it as a dietary staple poses nutritional risks. Gelatin lacks the essential amino acid tryptophan. Using it as a meal replacement could lead to amino acid deficiencies and compromise muscle health.
Palinski-Wade suggested for healthy adults interested in trying gelatin, mixing one tablespoon of unflavored gelatin powder in hot water, diluting with room-temperature water or herbal tea, and consuming 15 to 30 minutes before one daily meal. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individuals with kidney disease or animal allergies should consult a healthcare provider before using this method.
In conclusion, while gelatin is an affordable and low-risk option for appetite control, it isn’t a miracle solution for weight loss.
